Five Weeks In University: Of Lesson Structures And Academic Endeavours

1. Hanging in there. It’s been five weeks in university, and the good news is that I’m still in the Business School (and doing well, I hope). I did enter college with the preconceived notion that a business education sounds really fluffy, and that the modules would not have real academic-scholastic rigour; at the present moment, the teaching-learning pedagogies have been rather engaging and enriching. Courses related to accountancy, operations and legal information have great applications.

Besides my gripes about the contrived notion of “class participation” (here) in the college, I am struggling to come to terms with the school’s predilection for sectionals (3-hour sessions, with 30 to 40 students) over the traditional lecture-tutorial framework. I really don’t fancy the new pedagogies adopted here.

2. What does the future hold? Unlike many of my counterparts (many of whom, unsurprisingly, are certain that they would definitely major in finance), I’ve entered university with no clear end in mind. I don’t have aspirations to top classes with stellar grades (I’ve had enough of all the competition and constant comparisons with other individuals); all I want to do is to do well enough to meet the stipulated standards, to hold on to the scholarship and continue with the concurrent degree programme. I want to take things a step at a time, never looking beyond a week or month, and really use these five years to explore around and mature as a person.

3. Beyond the classroom. And it’s darn true that a college education is meaningless if you decide to coop yourself up in your room with your books all day long. Life feels, empty. And sad. Got to start doing something more, definitely.

  1. Hi Jin Yao,

I have two questions for you:
    1) Which scholarship did you receive ?
    2) What did you do and how to get it ?

The combination of degree (Biz and policy studies) you took up looks really attractive to me.
