Despite recent bids to save the 2015 nuclear accord – which the United States withdrew from last year – Iran said it plans to exceed limits on its stockpile of enriched uranium next week. Iran then shot down an American military drone, and reports also emerged that the United States had called for a retaliatory military strike before it was called off by President Donald Trump at the last minute. The Weekly Global Roundup: Protests In Hong Kong; Advances To Same-Sex Rights (June 10 to 15, 2019)

Hong Kong protestors gathered in multiple demonstrations to oppose a controversial extradition bill to China, leading to its indefinite suspension, while there were advances to same-sex rights in Botswana and Ecuador. In Hong Kong, a protest of one million protestors was followed by an additional one, leading Chief Executive Carrie Lam to announce an indefinite suspension of the proposed extradition bill. In Botswana, the high court overturned a colonial-era law criminalising same-sex relations, and in Ecuador the highest court approved same-sex marriage in a five-to-four vote. This comes in the same week that the supreme court of Brazil voted to criminalise homophobia, and a week after Bhutan decriminalised homosexuality, by voting to repeal provisions saying that “unnatural sex” is illegal. The Weekly Global Roundup: Deaths And Violence In Asia (May 20 to 25, 2019)

Accidents and natural disasters led to deaths in China and India, while attacks or riots in Indonesia, Nepal, and Tajikistan left many dead as well. In China, there were strong winds and an explosion caused by a gas leak from a cargo ship, and in India there was a fire in a building. In Indonesia – following the re-election of President Joko Widodo – there were post-election riots. In Nepal, there were three separate explosions. And in Tajikistan, there was a riot by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Continue reading
