The Weekly Global Roundup: Deaths And Violence In Asia And Latin America (October 22 to 27, 2018)

In Asia, the deadliest Taiwanese rail accident in 27 years killed at least 18 people, while accidents in India, Malaysia, and Myanmar killed dozens. While in Latin America, in Colombia in particular the violent deaths of Venezuelans have significantly increased. In Asia, the derailment of a train in Taiwan killed at least 18 people, a train accident in India killed at least 55, a landslide in a construction site in Malaysia killed two, while a blaze through an overcrowded camp in the Rakhine state in Myanmar killed six. In Latin America, the violent deaths of Venezuelans in Colombia rose more than threefold in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period in 2017, totalling 310 thus far. The Weekly Global Roundup: Governments Under Threat (June 18 to 23, 2018)

The governments of Germany and Nicaragua have come under threat this week, and in Colombia a conservative candidate won the presidential run-off. In Germany, after interior minister Horst Seehofer announced a tough new immigration policy last week, Chancellor Angela Merkel has two weeks to agree to a new migration policy with the European Union, or face a rebellion from her own government. In Nicaragua, protestors are looking to remove authoritarian President Daniel Ortega and his family from power. And in Colombia, conservative candidate Ivan Duque won the presidential run-off with 54 per cent of the vote. The 2016 peace agreement with former terror group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, remains a key issue. Continue reading
