Youth Career Platform “Todo Todo” Has Much To Do

Young Singaporeans will benefit from career mentorship and guidance, especially within a global economic landscape that is increasingly competitive and ambiguous, and therefore on paper the new initiative “Todo Todo” – a new mentorship programme which matches young job seekers with older volunteer career guides, who are “young PMEs with at least five years of working experience” (May 1, TODAY) – should provide participants with greater career and industry knowledge. As it stands, however, on its new website and its mobile app, there is still much for the People’s Association and the National Trades Union Congress to do, to improve the user experience and ultimately to make it easier to access the matching platform and network. Throwback: National Youth Council 2.0

After it was announced in 2014 that the National Youth Council would no longer be under the purview of the People’s Association, I expressed some scepticism over its programmes and activities. The letter – “More Than Autonomy Needed for NYC 2.0 to Work” – was published in TODAY, and its director Ng Chun Pin penned a reply, “NYC Committed to Evolve and Build Genuine Engagement with Youth”, a few days later. Great Aspirations

Despite Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s insistence at the National Day Rally that the university is not the only pathway to a bright future, this shift must go beyond rhetoric and the recommendations of the Applied Study in Polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Review (Aspire) committee. In the long-term the diversity in the schools and at the workplace will be beneficial, yet the present transition will be met with scepticism. Continue reading
